Jimmie R. Murkerson has served as the Sheriff of Early County since 1985 and has played an active and productive role in law enforcement locally and statewide.
Sheriff Murkerson was sworn in by Governor Joe Frank Harris 1984
Sheriff Murkerson proposed the consolidation of the various law enforcement services in the county in order to better serve the citizens of Early County. The combination of the resources of county and municipal law enforcement agencies has produced better service with more effective coverage throughout the county.
Consolidation of Law Enforcement Began 1990
He has lent his leadership skills and law enforcement talents to state initiatives, through his service as a member of the Georgia Peace Officers Standards and Training Council, the board of directors of the ABAC Police Academy , the Governor’s Children and Youth Coordinating Council, the Criminal Justice Coordinating Council, and the executive board of the Georgia Partnership for Excellence in Education and has earned the respect and admiration of his peers, as shown by his election as the President of the Georgia Sheriffs’ Association for the year 1997-98.
Sheriff Murkerson was appointed by Governor Zell Miller to the Children’s Youth Coordination Council, Criminal Justice Coordinating Council, and Peace Officers Standards Training Council.
He is known for his outstanding law enforcement and management skills and for his dedication to improving public safety throughout this state.
He served in the United States Air Force 1966-1970
